Stephen Huneck
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stephen Huneck (October 8, 1948 in Columbus, Ohio – January 7, 2010 in Littleton, New Hampshire was an American wood carving artist, furniture maker, painter, and author. Most of his later artwork is composed of carvings of dogs. Stephen credited the change in his artwork to his dogs coming into the hospital and bringing him out of a long coma. The coma was caused by him falling down the stairs of his barn studio and hitting his head. He had to learn to read, walk and write again and changed the focus of his work to dogs...which Steve noted is God spelled backwards. Prior to this a lot of Stephen's work was devoted to social commentary. In addition to carvings, Huneck also wrote several children's books, the main character of which was his black Labrador Retriever, Sally. Huneck was originally from Sudbury, Massachusetts.
Before becoming an artist, Huneck lived for several years at Quarry Hill Creative Center, Rochester, Vermont, where he began to work in wood. He then became an antiques dealer. He was discovered in 1984 when he found a man pulling one of his carvings, an angel, out of the back of Huneck's pick-up truck. The man asked how much he wanted for the angel. Not intending to sell it and believing that the man wouldn't pay such a high price, Huneck told him that he wanted $1,000. The man revealed himself to be an art dealer from Manhattan and paid Huneck the money. Pieces of Huneck's artwork are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Dog Museum of America and the American Kennel Club. Huneck received commissions for works from celebrities and politicians, including Sandra Bullock, Dr. Phil McGraw, and US Senator Patrick Leahy. Much of the basswood, cherry, maple and pine he worked with came from his farm.
In 1997, after a near death experience with acute respiratory distress syndrome, Huneck started work building a chapel dedicated to dogs. The Dog Chapel, which took three years to complete, is situated next to his studio in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. In addition to standard human sized doors, the chapel also has a dog door, carved wooden dogs lining the pews and dog themed stained glass windows. The inner walls are covered with remembrance notes and pictures of visitors' deceased canine pets.
Each year, Huneck and his wife, Gwen, held two gatherings known as the Dog Party and Dog Fest at his Dog Mountain studio. People brought their dogs for a day of relaxation. Contests were held for categories such as loudest bark, biggest/smallest dog, best dog kiss, etc. The dogs were let off their leashes and allowed to run free and play with other dogs.
Huneck was despondent over having to lay off employees in January 2010 and had been dealing with depression. On January 7, 2010, after driving to a psychiatrist's office in Littleton, New Hampshire, Huneck shot himself and died. He was 61 years old. After her husband's death, Gwen Huneck was the head of Dog Mountain until her death three and a half years later.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why Do We List All Records Individually, Instead of Using Quantity?
We get asked this alot, and the answer is quite simple. No two records are alike. Grading may be the same, but each cover and record is different. By listing each one individually with its own catalogue number, what you receive is exactly what you see pictured. This is especially important for cover condition. Some have hype stickers and shrink wrap, some have writing, etc. Be assured the record you receive will be the exact one in the picture. Using quantity instead of each record individually would save a ton of time, but we do it this way so that each buyer gets exactly what they are expecting!
Our Record Grading Scale M-NM
Our scale is similar, but not the same, as goldmine. We have used this scale for years and feel it most accurately represents the condition of the records.
Mint (Sealed)
Sealed In Shrink, Never Opened. Vinyl should be perfect
Mint (Not Sealed)
Vinyl.. Record will look as if it was never played. No scratches or blemishes of any sort. Very seldom used grade
Cover.. Cover will be nearly flawless, no writing, creases, damaged corners, etc. Very Seldom Used Grade
Near Mint
Vinyl...Record will be nearly flawless. No scratches, dings, scuffs, etc
Cover...Cover will look almost new. Maybe a tiny corner wear. No writing, creases, holes, dings, etc
1 of 3
Our Record Grading Scale EX-VG
Excellent
Vinyl...Most of the records we sell are in this range. Vinyl may have a few light scuffs or scratches, but nothing that distracts from the sound quality when playing.
Cover... Covers will look great with no major damages, writing, etc.
Very Good
Vinyl... Record will have scuffs and scratches, but they will not affect the play quality. Record should play through with no skips or major pops. Label may have writing on it.
Cover...Cover will show normal handling wear for the age. May have a cut or writing somewhere on the front or back. May have a light water stain. Will not have paper loss or drawing.
Our Record Grading Scale G-P
Good
Vinyl...A Good record is in fact not really that good. Should play through but may have sound distortions, pops, etc.
Cover...A Good cover is in fact not really that good either! It can be torn, water damaged, have paper loss, heavy writing, etc. But you will still be able to see it!
Fair and Poor
These grades are really one in the same.... and neither is good. Please don't buy a poor or fair graded record and expect it to look good or sound good! It probably won't!! These should only be used for art projects, collection fillers until a better copy can be obtained, or if you just want that particular record and don't want to spend a ton of money!!
Any questions about our grading guidelines please let us know!
Do We Buy Records and Record Collections?
Of course! Just message us for a quote! No collection is too large, and no transaction is too small. You may be surprised by what we will buy and how much we will pay for it!!
Do We Have A Storefront You Can Visit?
Not at this time. We are online only, and all items are shipped with the exception of large furniture items that are marked as pick up only.
Customer Satisfaction
Our #1 Priority is customer satisfaction. If your record does not play well, please email us and let us know. We will either offer a refund or a replacement. We don't just sell records, we help you build your collection. That's why every record is shipped in a clear 3 or 4mil plastic protector, which will preserve your record and cover for years to come. Also looks better than just having records loose on a shelf!! We have over 5000 repeat customers and hope to double that by the end of 2022. Our formula to do that is simple.. fair prices, honest descriptions and great customer service. If you are happy, so are we. If you aren't, let us at least try to make you happy!! You will find we are very easy to work with!
Do You Trade Records?
Of course! Let's say you have a bunch of country records, only problem is you like rock. Message us with a list of what you have, and which records in our shop you would like to trade for. We have done many trades where the only money that changes hands is for shipping!
Do you carry other records not listed in the store?
Yes! At any given time we will have 3-5000 records listed in our store. At that same time, we have another 10-15 thousand that aren't listed! As the old saying goes, there is not enough time in the day! We have a complete list of the majority of them, so if you are looking for something particular just message us and we will tell you if we have it, the condition and price, and then set up a custom listing for you with pictures and any specific details.
